This is the SMART Fitness blog, created to help those men and women who have lost their way when it comes to their health/fitness and don’t know quite how to reach their ideal weight, improve their strength, and increase their energy levels.
It is a passion of mine to help coach people to EAT, MOVE, and REST SMART so they can develop the habits necessary to achieve their HEALTH and FITNESS goals and keep them for life.
My background: I have been involved in fitness since 1977 and spent the last 35 years studying all aspects of health and fitness: strength training (everything from weight training, kettlebells, bodyweight, suspension trainers like the TRX, etc.), cardiovascular exercise (walking, running. cycling, swimming, etc.), and nutrition and fat loss principles. I spent 12 years in the U.S. Navy serving on board submarines which requires a high degree of physical fitness. I have run a marathon (Kiawah Island 2004 – 3:58, age 43), two half marathons (Governor’s Cup 2004 and Nashville 2007), a USMC Mud Run (2008 with my amazing wife!) and one sprint triathlon (2011).
